Indexing and ranking are two important concepts in website optimization for search engines. While they are related, they refer to different aspects of the search engine optimization (SEO) process.

Indexing:

Indexing is the process by which search engine crawlers or spiders discover and analyze the content on a website. When a search engine crawls a website, it scans through the pages, images, and other content, and creates an index of the information. This index is then used by the search engine to provide relevant results to users when they perform a search query.

When a website is indexed, it means that the search engine has analyzed the content and added it to its database. This does not guarantee that the website will rank well in search results, but it is the first step in the process.
in addition, indexing is the process of of being present or appearing in search engines, been it Google, Bing, Baidu or yahoo search.

Ranking:

Ranking refers to the order in which websites appear in search engine results pages (SERPs) for a specific search query. When a user enters a search query, the search engine uses its index to identify relevant results and rank them based on their relevance and authority.

The ranking of a website is influenced by a variety of factors, including the content on the page, the quality and quantity of backlinks, the relevance of the website to the search query, and the overall user experience of the website.

Differences:

The main difference between indexing and ranking is that indexing is the process of adding a website's content to the search engine's database, while ranking is the process of determining the order in which websites appear in search results.

Indexing is a necessary step in the SEO process, as a website must be indexed in order to appear in search results. However, being indexed does not guarantee that a website will rank well in search results.

Ranking, on the other hand, is influenced by a variety of factors, including the quality and relevance of the website's content, the authority of the website, and the overall user experience. Improving these factors can help a website rank higher in search results and increase its visibility to potential customers.
